Chapter Three

Janika couldn’t help but to chuckle at the irony. She finally had a night off from work, and she was going to meet the tiger shifters at Club Heat for a game of pool. At least Kit would be on the job. Janika hoped the night would be slow enough for them to spend a little time together.

If the crowd upstairs was dull, Kit would probably head down to visit her. After all, the tiger shifters didn’t exactly hate vampires; they just didn’t usually hang out with them. And since Kit had been a friend with her for so long, she knew it wouldn’t be a problem.

Janika whistled as she strolled down the lonely sidewalk toward Club Heat. As far as she was concerned, things couldn’t be going any better. She’d bought into a pack protection contract, her best friend was starting to become a more frequent fixture in her life, and Lance could make a suitable partner one day if she ever decided to settle down. While it was true that a shifter transformation was notoriously painful, Janika was willing to take her chances if things went so far. A few nights of pain as she transformed from a tiger back into a human being might do her some good, maybe even her out a little bit.

Janika felt spunky enough to take on the entire pack every night of the week, and they didn’t seem to have a problem with it, but she figured a little relaxation should make its way into her life at some point.

She was only a few blocks away from Club Heat when an eerie prickle began to toy at the base of her spine. Janika paused in her tracks, and then slowly turned to look behind her. There was nobody in sight, and nothing else present, save for an old plastic bag that drifted lazily in the evening breeze from one side of the street to the other.

Janika frowned. She prided herself on her instincts and was certain she was being followed. She picked up her pace as she headed toward the club. She’d feel safe just as soon as she was in Lance’s strong arms again. He had that effect on her, whether they were just playing around for the time being or not.

A sudden clatter in the alleyway she was passing made Janika jump. She clapped a hand over her mouth so she didn’t shriek as she spun around to face the danger. No point in showing how scared she was. After all, any evil demonic creatures would just feed off her fear, and Janika liked to think she didn’t scare easy.

A pair of glowing red eyes met her gaze, and Janika sunk into her spot on the sidewalk, lost for words. The man in front of her was clearly a vampire, wearing a black ponytail down his back and a leather jacket over his crimson dress shirt. He looked rich and smelled even more expensive, and Janika figured he was one of the vampiric entertainment moguls that frequented their city.
